OLAF DE FLEUR

"... I'm a filmboy travelling the world for interesting and uninteresting subjects. The more films I make the more human I become - although I seem to use films to interrupt emotional processes. My mission is to widen my own understanding of this sarcastic, over populated, shallow yet rich human society we've all been dumped in for the time being."

" ... As a general rule, people are not interested in anything but themselves. You should be sure when you execute an idea that no one will be interested. That will keep you focused, that you better have something or else you're going to have an empty cinema. I am a shallow person, people are shallow and egoistic, they want to experience things inside themselves, and they have opinions about everything they see, usually negative feelings, maybe I'm being too pessimistic, but it's the way I'm sure things are. The world is negative, things can always be better, we're never happy, and therefore always negative, even when we are positive, it's just a cheap way to pretend things are different than they really are. I don't mean this literally, this overwhelming negatively helps us squeeze out the juice and find the seeds that give our life something to hold on to. People are not interested at all in what you do, except they would like to be able to express what piece of crap your film is. This way of thinking helps me focus, not that I am scared of making a bad film, but I pretend to care for my own sake, it can only benefit my future to think like this.

FILM TALK COMMENTS Poppoli director Olaf de Fleur Johannesson babbles about films and his ego-centric vision (from various sources).

TAKING REAL LIFE TO THE MOVIES
[FrontFilm Magazine, Australia]
" ... You know how it i
s, in every film you have a set-up and then all the film goes into following that through, so if you have a bank-robber who is planning the big robbery, and suddenly his son dies, only that will break-up the limited linear structure of a film-piece. But what if real life is like that for some bank robber and you want to do a film about it? You're going to have a hard time financing that kind of genre, not if you have a documentary, then it's only interesting. This sums up the difference between a fic and a doc, the latter is obviously much more a freeing form, but much harder to structure than any fiction. That's why we have so many "uncompleted" docs out there.

EXPANDING THE LANGUAGE
[Radio, Philippines]

" ... In my opinion there are only a hand full of filmmakers trying to discover where it's possible to expand the fiction film language. Maybe it's not so difficult, but people have to be interested, and have to able to follow the film, take Syriana for example, that film is a great doc/fic combination, but still leaves too many things hanging. Nevertheless the effort of it was important for trying to expand the language."

f Icelandic Modern Art • TV Series
A series of films presenting the most exciting artists on Iceland's vibrant and exciting art scene. The Icelandic art scene is a vibrant melting pot of style and innovation, producing new generations of artists, many of whom are active in international exhibitions and represented by galleries in major cities abroad. Interest in art is high in Iceland and more people visit museums and galleries than attend all sports events combined. This interest is the basis of a particularly lively art scene supporting a new generation of mature and innovated artists, now in their forties. This is the generation our series deals with and in each programme we focus on a single artists, delving into his art and his ideas, his life and influences. The style of the programme varies to reflect the works and style of the artists being featured. This is an innovative series that combines art and human interest, information and humour. [producer, edit]

f Jesus is closer to home - Documentary

It eventually becomes clear that the film is enacted in Amsterdam and that the participants are loosely connected to each other by the fact that they all work in the Red Light District. The whole is woven together into a documenatry about people in the city. [co-director, producer, edit] • [read more]

f Poison - TV FILM
A one-hour television drama about love and destiny, relating the story of a young writer and the conflicts he encounters when he tries to reconcile his writing with his love for a beautiful woman. A young writer, Vilmundur, has been suffering from writer's block when he meets a young woman, Nina, who believes in him and encourages him in his work. As they grow closer he finally manages to complete the manuscript that he has been working on for years and at the same time feels that he must now leave Nina. As soon as he has done that he is plunged into despair and crawls back to convince her to take him in again. The film describes emotional turmoil, roller coaster relationships and conflicting hopes. The conflicts between the two main characters reflect the increasingly confused emotional state of Western cultures and the often contradictory messages we receive from each other. The story combines drama, a plot filled with surprises and intense personal conflict as the characters try to find their place and destiny. When Vilmundur has finally succeeded in getting Nina to take him back it seems that the story is at last moving towards a happy ending. But doubt seeps back in: Is he doing the right thing? Wouldn't he, after all, be better off without her? Thus the story begins anew and repeats itself. [screenplay, main role, producer, edit]
